What “cash out” means on Polymarket
The phrase can describe up to three steps:
- Sell an open position before resolution, or redeem winning shares after resolution.
- Confirm that the proceeds are available as pUSD.
- Withdraw through a supported destination asset and network.
These steps should not be collapsed into one claim. A user can realize a position into pUSD without withdrawing it, and a withdrawal does not itself close an open position.
Option 1: sell before the market resolves
A position can generally be offered for sale while trading remains open. Execution still requires willing buyers.
- A market sell takes available bids. It prioritizes execution but can move through several prices and incur slippage.
- A limit sell sets the lowest acceptable price. It may remain unfilled or fill only partly.
A resting limit sell currently acts as a maker order. If its price immediately crosses an existing bid, it executes as a taker and can incur the market's taker fee. See the limit-order guide for order duration and fill behavior.
Worked example: exit now or wait
Assume a trader owns 100 YES shares. The market page shows a price around 0.63, but the best bid is 0.62.
| Choice | Potential gross result | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Market sell into 0.62 | 62 pUSD if all 100 shares fill there, before any taker fee | Further size may reach lower bids |
| Place a 0.65 limit sell | Up to 65 pUSD if the full order later fills | No fill is guaranteed |
| Hold through resolution | 100 pUSD if YES wins; 0 if YES loses | Outcome and resolution timing remain uncertain |
The displayed price can be a midpoint or last trade rather than an executable bid. Check the order book and order preview before estimating proceeds.
Option 2: redeem after final resolution
When a market reaches final resolution, trading stops. Each winning share is redeemable for 1 pUSD and each losing share is worth 0.
Redemption is not a trade with another user. It exchanges the finalized winning outcome token for collateral. If the proposed result is challenged, redemption must wait until the resolution process is final.
Option 3: withdraw the available pUSD
- Confirm that the pUSD is in the available balance.
- Cancel resting orders that reserve funds no longer intended for trading.
- Open Withdraw and select a supported destination asset and network.
- Verify the address and review expected output after route costs.
- Confirm and track the transaction to the receiving service.
Polymarket says it does not add a direct platform withdrawal fee. Gas, bridge, swap, price-impact, slippage, and third-party costs can still apply. The withdrawal guide covers the route in detail.
Withdrawing crypto is not the same as receiving fiat
Polymarket International's documented flow sends a supported crypto asset to an outside address. Selling that asset for dollars, euros, or another national currency is a later action handled by an exchange, wallet provider, or off-ramp.
Provider availability, identity checks, bank methods, fees, and tax treatment depend on the service and jurisdiction. A Polymarket withdrawal does not guarantee access to any particular fiat route.
Common cash-out problems
The executable value is below the portfolio value
A portfolio may use a midpoint or market estimate, while a seller receives current bids. A wide spread or shallow book can reduce the amount available now.
Only part of the position sold
There was not enough demand at the selected price. The unfilled shares remain in the portfolio; review or cancel the remainder before submitting another order.
The event ended, but redemption is unavailable
The event ending and final market resolution are different moments. A proposal has a challenge period, and a dispute can extend finalization for several days.
The available balance is smaller than expected
Some value may still be in open shares or reserved for orders. A displayed market value is not the same as withdrawable pUSD.
Regional controls block an action
Polymarket applies restrictions based on physical location. Some regimes are fully blocked and others are close-only. Do not use a VPN to bypass controls; follow the current options for the actual location.
Focused answers
Frequently asked questions
Can I cash out before a Polymarket market ends?
Yes, when trading remains open and buyers are available. The achievable price and quantity depend on the order book, and a limit order is not guaranteed to fill.
Is there a fixed early-cash-out penalty?
No separate fixed early-exit penalty appears in the documented prediction-market mechanics. Spread, slippage, and an applicable taker fee can still reduce proceeds.
What happens if I hold a winning share to resolution?
After final resolution, each winning share can be redeemed for 1 pUSD. Losing shares are worth zero.
Why can I not sell at the displayed market price?
The display can be a bid-ask midpoint or last trade. A seller receives available bids, which may be lower and may not have enough depth for the entire position.
Is withdrawing the same as cashing out to a bank?
No. A Polymarket withdrawal sends a supported crypto asset to an outside address. Fiat conversion and a bank transfer are separate outside-provider steps.
Can I use these steps for Polymarket US?
Do not assume so. Polymarket US is a separate product and account with its own funding and withdrawal documentation.
Bottom line
Choose the action that matches the position state
Sell an open position at available bids or through a price-controlled limit order. Redeem a finalized winner at 1 pUSD per share. Only after the value is available pUSD should it move through a separate withdrawal route.
